Symposium of the 37th Annual Meeting of the Japan Section of the RSAI

Regional Development in the 21st Century:
Lessons from EU

Co-organized by Tohoku Gakuin University

Chairperson: Wilson Alley, Tohoku Gakuin Univ.

Moderator: Tasuo Ito, Nagoya Industrial Univ., and Takao Fukuchi, Asahi Univ.

Overview: Deregulation, the globalization of economic activities and the ongoing integration of economic blocks have had a significant impact on the economies of developed contries. Accordingly, the principles and philosophy of regional development have had to be adapted to meet these changes. As we expect this trend to continue in the 21st century, these changes will become more amplified.

It is considered that the EU countries have been successful in adapting to the changes bought about by mini-globaliztion due to unification. This symposium will consider the future of regional policy in Japan in light of the EU experience. First, it will look at what policy changes have occured due to unification; in particular, the reasons for these changes and the effect they have had on the EU economy. It will then consider what factors are likely to effect regional policy in Japan in the future and its likely effects.
