GRASSLAND ANIMAL SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT IN CHINA: AN
INTERREGIONAL APPROACH

Ou Li and James R. Simpson

A regional case study using the PRA method is presented of one village in the autonomous region of Inner Mongolia, China, which was transformed over the past 40 years from a nomadic system to a semi-nomadic one, and is currently partially sedentary and partially semi-nomadic. An explanation of the transformation process and impact on the ecosystem is provided along with the historical cultural setting. An economic analysis and a technical analysis is also given about the next potential transformation, which is a shift from an integrated cow/calf and growing system to shipping calves from the grasslands of Inner Mongolia to the
cropping areas of north central China.
